Museum of St Albans

Here, you can discover the fascinating story of our historic cathedral city and the rise of St Albans from market town to a modern commuter city. Special exhibitions are held regularly and the museum has a wildlife garden. UH Galleries exhibit established artists, as well as showcasing more experimental work, providing audiences with the opportunity to engage with contemporary art and discover an array of surprises and perhaps hidden interests in a varied and vibrant programme of exhibitions.

Founded as the Hertfordshire County Museum in 1898, the Museum of St Albans tells the story of St Albans from the departure of the Romans to the present day.

In the medieval gallery you can find out about Alban, Britain's first Christian martyr, and the Abbey that grew up around the site of his martyrdom. See objects used by people in medieval St Albans and learn how they lived.

More fascinating and colourful displays continue the story of how St Albans developed from a small market town into a bustling commuter city. Special displays with a wide range of objects illustrate everyday life in Victorian St Albans.

A particular attraction is the regular programme of special exhibitions, covering a whole range of subjects from Barbie dolls to the Egyptians. There is also a wide range of activities for people of all ages, more details are in the What's On section of the museum website.
