Museum of St Albans

The old Museum of St Albans closed on 20th September 2015 as part of a planned redevelopment of St Albans Town Hall into a new museum and gallery. Find out more on the St Albans Museums website.

A New Museum and Gallery for St Albans The Museums team's biggest current project is the development of a new museum and gallery in the Town Hall building. The Council have agreed a ten year development plan which involved closing the Museum of St Albans (on Hatfield Road) in September 2015, in order to develop a new museum and gallery using the Town Hall building in the centre of St Albans.
Heritage Lottery Fund The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) have awarded round one funding to this project and we submitted an application for stage two funding during summer 2015. St Albans City and District Council are contributing most of the funds for the new museum and gallery but we still need to fundraise to reach our target. The new museum and gallery is expected to open in late 2017 subject to receiving further funding from the HLF.
(Verulamium museum is unaffected and will remain open).
