Best autumn walks 15 Oct 2025

As the leaves turn golden and the air takes on that crisp autumn feel, there’s no better time to get outside and enjoy St Albans’ beautiful surroundings. Whether you’re after a peaceful morning stroll with a takeaway coffee or a weekend walk wrapped up in your favourite knit, these local spots are perfect for soaking up the season.

1. Verulamium Park

A true St Albans favourite. The park looks especially stunning in autumn when the trees around the lake glow in shades of orange and red. Take a loop around the water, stop by the café for something warm, and enjoy watching the ducks glide across the water. History lovers can also explore the nearby Roman walls and mosaic remains, it’s the perfect blend of nature and heritage.

Autumn tip: Book the Tower Tour at The Cathedral to view the park from the ultimate spot.

2. Heartwood Forest

Just outside the city, Heartwood Forest comes alive in autumn with rich golden tones and crisp woodland air. With over half a million trees and miles of walking routes, it’s ideal for dog walkers, families, or anyone looking to unwind outdoors.

Autumn tip: Visit early in the morning to catch the sunlight streaming through the trees, it’s a beautiful sight.

3. Gorhambury Estate

For something a little quieter, head to Gorhambury Estate. The grounds are full of charm, with ancient woodland, rolling hills, and the striking ruins of Gorhambury House. The long, tree-lined drive is especially picturesque in autumn, offering that cinematic countryside feel right on the city’s doorstep.

Autumn tip: Round off your walk with a roast or a pint to St Alban’s city centre it’s just a short drive.

St Albans truly shines in autumn. From its historic streets to its countryside trails, the city offers countless ways to enjoy the season. So pull on your boots, grab a warm drink, and head out to see the colours change, one leafy path at a time.
