A true family business, Greens was established in 1945 by Bobby Green and has traded in exactly the same spot ever since – on St Peter’s St – outside the store that was then ‘Rumbalows’ (the electrical store) then ‘New Look’ and today is home to ‘o2.’
For the last 37 years it has been run by his Grandson, Richard (pictured above with his father) and his brother Stephen.
“I’ve worked on St Albans market since I was 13-years-old, and I still get the same buzz today as I did back then – to be a part of a bright and strong community.”
With such a heritage in St Albans Market, we caught up with Richard to find out how he has innovated and adapted the family business to meet the needs of today’s customer.
Why do you think Greens has stood the test of time?
The busines was built on providing quality menswear and to surprise the customer with such affordable pricing. My Grandfather was also exceptional at building relationships with people and making sure customers were always looked after. People knew to come to the stall
because they would get a great service, quality items and they would enjoy the market experience. These are values that we still stand by today.
How have your clothing lines changed over the years?
When my Grandfather started the stall, it sold menswear – shirts, jackets and outerwear. Over the years, we have diversified to include more casual lines including T-shirts and country ware items We also now specialise in large clothing with sizes up to 5XL.
What are your bestsellers?
Our Polo Shirts are always popular with customers liking the variety of colours and size options. Our sports socks always sell well and are great value with two-for-one offers. Look out for our new sweaters too, which are very well priced at £25 and an autumn essential.
What do you love about St Albans market?
It’s a great market and has provided our family with a great living. Customers are very loyal and are fantastic at supporting local independents and traders, which is ever-important with the domination of online shopping.
What advice do you have to anyone thinking about setting up a stall on St Albans market?
We’ve seen many people come and go over the years. I believe, that to be successful you must be committed to the market. Whatever the weather you must show up! And to be passionate about the people, too. To chat and genuinely care for your customers and other traders and become a part of this fantastic, diverse market town.
