This year for Heritage Open Days at St Albans Cathedral, we’re rounding up our Medieval Summer theme with a food-filled weekend! Meet Brother Rockcliffe, a fabulous baker and inventor of the Hot Cross Bun, ready to tell you all about the abbey’s kitchens. You can also find Brother Infirmarian, equipped with a huge basket of herbs which the abbey’s monks used to treat illnesses. He can tell you how to cure all sorts of ailments, from a headache to a broken bone, all with the power of plants. There might even be some troublesome townspeople around to tell you about the Peasants’ Revolt and why food made them storm the abbey in 1381.
Meet our medieval characters on Saturday 18 September and Sunday 19 September, 12.30pm – 3.30pm. Our virtual Medieval Bake Off will be held for the duration of Heritage Open Days from Friday 10 September – Sunday 19 September. During this time there will be information leaflets in the Cathedral so you can learn all about medieval food.
If you can’t make it in person this year, why not join our virtual Medieval Bake Off on social media? All you have to do is bake something inspired by the Cathedral and post it to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, tag us @stalbanscathedral and use the hashtag #MedievalMunchies to get involved.’
