Meet master maker Megan Turner!

Meet master maker Megan Turner owner of Mini Megan Turner on Catherine Street. She opened her pink premises 5 years ago and makes and sells children’s clothes and accessories for boys and girls aged 0-3 months and up to 11/12 yrs.
We grabbed her for a few quick questions about her thriving business.
What do you sell?
Handmade clothes and accessories in the shop and online. I make most of the stock myself in standard sizing and can personalise items too. I also sell great party bags with fabulous goodies inside – kids love them!
What did you do before you opened your shop?
I studied womenswear so I know all about the history of fashion, design, pattern cutting and dressmaking.
What took you into childrenswear?
When shopping for my nephew’s clothes I realised it was mainly pink for girls and blue for boys. I thought there should be more colours, prints and styles available so began to make my own.

What is popular with customers?
Tutus! I make them in all colours, it’s not just baby pink here! My customers also love my use of bold prints and bright colours, plus a lot of the fabric is deadstock which would otherwise have gone to landfill.
Why St Albans?
I am born and bred here, and I love it. As a little girl I wanted a pink shop in St Albans, and I used to walk past this one. Now I can’t believe I run my business from this pink shop – it’s a dream come true!

Best bit about your job?
It’s really rewarding turning a design in my head into a wearable item. Kids love to see me at the machine, they can’t believe that I am making clothes and ask loads of questions.
What’s next?
A bridesmaid range where I will be able to colour match schemes; it’s a popular request so I’ll soon be able to assist!
