Pints in St Albans through the Centuries

Pints in St Albans through the Centuries 28 Nov 2025

St Albans is famous for its Cathedral and Roman heritage, but step off the high street, and you’ll find another kind of history. With over 50 pubs across the city, St Albans has one of the richest pub cultures in the country. And did you know that St Albans has about the same number of pubs now as it did 200 years ago!

Here’s our mini guide to some of the city’s oldest and most iconic pubs, where every pint comes with a side of heritage.

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks

Location: Abbey Mill Lane, AL3 4HE

Reputed to be one of England’s oldest pubs (with roots claimed as far back as AD 793), Ye Olde Fighting Cocks is as much a local landmark as the cathedral next door. Sitting beside the River Ver and Verulamium Park, its low ceilings, dark oak beams and octagonal shape whisper tales of centuries past. Once a medieval pigeon house turned inn, it became a favourite stop for pilgrims and travellers alike.

Today, it’s the perfect place to warm up after a stroll through the park. Think roaring fires in winter, riverside tables in summer, and a food menu that blends pub classics with seasonal flair.

The Peahen

Location: 14 London Road, AL1 1NG

Standing proudly at the foot of Holywell Hill, The Peahen has been welcoming guests since the 15th century. Once a busy coaching inn serving travellers from London, it offered stables, hearty meals, and a warm bed for the night. Its name nods to the era of colourful inn signs, a time when literacy was low and a bright peahen on a board said “good beer this way.”

Today, it’s part of the McMullen’s family and still carries that sense of hospitality. Inside, you’ll find modern comfort alongside nods to its heritage, with plenty of spots to settle in for a leisurely lunch or a glass of wine with friends.

The Boot

Location: 4 Market Place, AL3 5DG

Tucked into the heart of the city centre, just steps from the Cathedral and with a perfect view of the Clock Tower, The Boot is a St Albans institution. Dating back to the 15th century, it’s one of the most photographed pubs in town, a Grade II listed building with exposed beams and a sloping roof that oozes charm.

Centuries ago, it was a haunt for market traders and locals catching up after a day’s work. Today, it’s still buzzing, a proper pub where you can expect a lively crowd, real ales, and hearty pub grub.

There are too many pubs to list so why not hear about them for yourself at the “Inns & Alehouses in Victorian St Albans” exhibition now on at St Albans Museums. Or join the Pubs of St Albans Walking Tour. Out of the 92 establishments mentioned in the exhibition, 30 are still open today!

Raise your glass to St Albans. Where every pub is part of the past, and every visit adds a new chapter.
