Galio Jewellers have worked with Bremont since the watch brand launched and are incredibly proud to be exclusive stockists of the Bremont Hawking in Hertfordshire.
Here, Sarah Gillow, co-founder of Galio, tells us a bit more about the launch and why this timepiece is so special…
How did this collaboration come about?
Nick and Giles English, the founders of Bremont, are continually looking for new ideas for their Historic limited editions, which often take over three years to develop and include some form of charitable base.
Their father- the inspiration for the whole brand often talked about Sir Stephen and the fact they were at St Albans Boys School together. Latterly, the English family lived in Cambridgeshire and their acquaintance was rekindled when they used to see Sir Stephen in the city. So when they were brainstorming ideas for the 2020 limited edition, they contacted the Hawking Foundation.
It is wood from the actual desk Professor Hawkings sat at?
A design feature of the watch includes inlaid circles of wood representing the planets in space. the wood used is from the bottom of the central desk drawer of a desk he used at home when he lived in St Albans.
Tell us more about the detail in the design
The detail in this watch is exquisite. Every design feature has a meaning or a function- its inspirational! The Hawking Stainless Steel, Rose Gold and White Gold feature: On the dial: a 30 second retrograde seconds hand window and a beautifully etched classically styled face with baton indices. The design of the etching was inspired by the swirling patterns from the centre of the black hole. On the back you have 3 planets made from the wooden desk and inlaid into the metal. At the centre there is a piece of meteorite inlaid- using marquetry techniques. The heavy engraving on the rest of the back depicts stars in the sky as seen from Oxford on Stephen Hawking’s date of birth.
The Hawking Quantum model is a new diversion for Bremont. It features a meteorite dial with diamond indices and a diamond bezel. The back has a black tungsten rotor featuring cut out swirls to represent the movement of the black hole. All the backs have their limited number engraved on them.
How many pieces are there in the collection?
The Hawking. There are 3 options – white gold, rose gold and steel. 88 are being made worldwide in the golds and 388 in the steel worldwide. The Hawking Quantum. Just the one model- steel and diamond – 88 worldwide
