Plan your afternoon

Here's where you'll find all your favourite activities

Illuminating St Albans

In a change to our original plan, we're not going to be having the usual countdown to lights-on from the stage at 5pm. Instead you'll be able to see the City in all its festive finery from around 4pm on Sunday 21 November at our event which takes place throughout the afternoon from 12-6pm

Here's where to see the festive lights

Look for the wonderful illuminated installations around the City Centre, such as the bauble and the carriage. The Boot and the Clock Tower will be lit up, as will the Museum + Gallery.¬† Outside the Alban Arena, near Santa’s grotto, the Christmas Tree will be decked out in all its finery, and as the daylight fades you’ll see the cross-street illuminations start to twinkle. To add to the atmosphere at the Christmas Cracker event on 21 November we’ll have illuminated aerobatic artistry and stiltwalkers spreading the festive joy throughout the City…

Here's what we have for you...

Bring your friends for an afternoon of free entertainment throughout the City Centre on St Peter's Street, Chequer Street, High Street and Market Place as well as around the Alban Arena

Free Family Festive Fun!

See our fantastic range of market stalls featuring artisans, crafters, traders and makers of all kinds on St Peter’s Street and Market Place. Sample street food and enjoy a drink of hot chocolate or mulled wine from one of our many food and drink traders. Visit Father Christmas in his grotto near the Alban Arena and meet his reindeer. Arts and Crafts from Artshed and The Wild Tribe, as well as wooden games, near Barclays Bank are great for while you are waiting! There is an additional craft activity taking place inside the St Albans Museum + Gallery, too, in association with the Remarkable World of Trees exhibition taking place there until 23 January 2022.

Street performers such as the Bouncing Elves, the Bad Santas and the Luminas will be entertaining us throughout the afternoon, along with some very mischievous Gingerbread Men!

Funfair rides will be dotted around the City Centre but mainly located on Chequer Street and in front of the Museum + Gallery, where you’ll also find our facepainters and a fabulous exhibition of ice carving. See how long you can stay on at the reindeer rodeo on High Street, too!
